When an OH&S officer comes to your site, will it be a positive experience? Are you worried that the officer will find something wrong and that your plans for the next few days, weeks, or months are going to be disrupted while you address a contravention?
On any particular day, every organization can have something that doesn’t meet the OH&S Regulations. Most of the issues are easy fixes. However, some of the issues and potential contraventions can be a major disruption and often have to be remedied within 30 days. Very few of the issues and potential contraventions are a major disruption if you have the time to plan your approach.
SASM can perform an intensive inspection and/or gap analysis of your facility that will allow you to plan ahead. It is much better for you to have SASM find, define and illustrate an issue than to have an OH&S officer do it. The following items are just a few of the OH&S Regulations that require specific programs and actions at your manufacturing plant. While most firms are well aware of the requirement to train forklift drivers, etc. the “occupational health programs” are often overlooked. Firms in Saskatchewan are required to have:
a. A hearing protection program that teaches workers how to use their hearing protection, measures the fit of that hearing protection, measures the noise levels in the facility, and if the noise is over 85 decibels provides for audiometric testing at least every two years. Regulations 99 and 109 - 114 speak directly to the issue. SASM provides Members with noise level area and personal dosimeter testing, fit protection testing and audiometric testing at discounted rates.
b. An ergonomics program that teaches workers the signs and symptoms of ergonomic injury as well as the basic controls they can use to protect themselves. Regulation 81 requires regular review of the ergonomic program by management and the OHS Committee. SASM provides Members with online ergonomic and site-specific training at no charge, provides ergonomic assessments at no charge and will train your staff on the development of physical demands descriptions at no charge.
c. A respiratory protection program that teaches workers how to use a mask, a fit testing program that ensures the mask fits properly and a testing program that ensures masks are worn where the contaminants in the air exceed the allowable limits. Regulations 88, 89 and 98 address the issue. SASM provides Members with online respiratory protection training at no charge. SASM provides at site fit testing and air quality testing at deeply discounted rates.
